“Village Pride Day 2007”

Village Trash Pickup

Wow!  What a great photo!  And, what a beautiful day for Altrusans to gather once more to participate in “Village Pride Day,” trash pickup.  From what I hear, the Altrusans split into two groups and rapidly took care of their assigned routes and continued on to tackle even more areas.

Good work, Altrusans, keeping America and Hot Springs Village beautiful!

HSV Altrusa Club Booth

 At 2007 HSV Community Fair

The Hot Springs Village Altrusa Club greeted many visitors at the HSV Community Fair, held September 26th at the Coronado Center.  In keeping with a “Sports Theme,” the Altrusa table was decorated with sports items, trophies, pennants in Altrusa colors of blue and white, the Club banner and several “sports telephones” from Ed Holt’s large collection of unique telephones.  Two tickets were drawn for free tickets to the Club’s fund-raiser, “A Chocolate Fantasy,”  to be held October 26, 2007.  Ten to twelve members alternated at the table all day, to greet visitors and tell them all about Altrusa and our community service projects.

Altrusa’s Garland County Jail Service Project

The Hot Springs Village Altrusa Club is helping the Garland County Jail Ministries, Inc. in Hot Springs, Arkansas, stock a library of interesting reading materials for the inmates.  Over 500 books and magazines have been delivered, for a good start on a library that is being built by the ministry.

All donated materials have been pre-screened by Altrusa members to meet specific guidelines:  they should about enjoyable topics, positive in nature, non-provocative and non-violent.  Even the ads were pre-screened.

This is just one of many service projects the HSV Altrusa Club underwrites with our annual fund-raiser.  In this case, more “labor” and “time” are spent than dollars, so it is a very efficient way for us to serve our community.

Garland County Department of Human Services

Division of Children and Family Services

From bleak to cheery and children-friendly, members and friends of the HSV Altrusa Club transformed the visitation room at the Garland County Department of Human Services in Hot Springs.  The room originally had a television on the floor and little else.

Donations and fund-raiser purchases included a baby port-a-crib, a TV stand, a hand-made bookshelf, a glider rocking chair, card table with chairs, a colorful new rug and a variety of books, games, toys, puzzles and crayons.  Altrusa members hope that this project provides the families who come to the Division of Children and Family Services a positive environment as they deal with very stressful situations.

Custom made solid oak table and chairs were delivered along with an area rug to further enhance Division of Children & Family Services visitation room.  Table and chairs were made and donated by Lee Smith of HSV Woodworkers.  Rug was purchased by our Altrusa Club.  Both added warmth to this room where children and parents have supervised visitation through the Garland County Department of Human Services in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Seated at the new table are Altrusans, Ouida Wolfe and

Carol Henderson.
