Phyllis Fisher, Joan Hoover and Ginna Watson were Delegates to Altrusa International’s 50th Convention held in Orlando, Florida, at Disney World, July 13 through 16.  The Delegates thanked the Club for electing them to represent our great Club.

And this …..

Highlights from Convention:   As excerpted from Joan Hoover, Phyllis Fisher and Ginna Watson’s Reports:

International Membership as of June 1, 2007 was 11,118.

The next International Convention will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 17-20, 2009, at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.

The 2011 International Convention will be held July 22-25, 2011, at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The 2013 Convention will be in New Zealand — details to be determined and announced at a later date.

As of 6/1/07 there are 387 clubs including three that were chartered in the 2005-2007 biennium.

Altrusa International is working on a new manual for ASTRA Clubs which would be of great help.

The convention Briefing on Bylaws, Resolutions and Recommendations was very interesting and informative as was the Convention Briefing on Association Finances.  The International Reception and Opening Banquet were beautiful as flags of the nations and the United Nations were presented.

Dr. Michael Shoulders presented a wonderful “Reading is Magic” session, and the first of three business meetings was held.

A balanced budget was approved.

Nine new ASTRA Clubs were announced.

Three new Altrusa Clubs were chartered —     Marietta, Georgia; Carol County, New Hampshire; and Morrisville, New Zealand.

Mamie L. Bass Service Award went to Waco, Texas.

Our silent auction item – an anonymous donation by a HSV club member – brought $230 for the International Foundation – total raised was over $8000.

A Grant Application Process workshop was presented, and we learned that every grant that was requested from the Foundation, up to $1,000, was awarded last year.  Grants range from $250 to $1,000,  based on need and funds available and are subject to specific selection criteria.  Excellent information was provided on writing a successful application.

Legal Workshop:  The President’s Handbook is being modified and updated.  A committee has been appointed to revise guidelines into one criterion and distribute uniform guidelines to all club presidents.

Membership:  A goal was set for each member to sponsor a new member and turn membership numbers around.  We are urged to recruit men into our membership.  Membership recruitment is also changing because of generational issues.  For the first time, Altrusa is looking at four generations with different values working side-by-side.  Members are the heart of what we do, and the gap is widening due to different values of generations from the traditional (1925-45), baby boomers (1946-64), generation X (1965-1980), and generation Y (1981-2002).

Five points for recruiting are:  AWARENESS-- who/what our club is; RECRUITMENT--price, point, benefit, incentive, Value Proposition, emotional connection; ENGAGEMENT--quickly put new members to work so they feel as if they belong; INTERDEPENDENCE--a common vision for all members; RENEWAL--depends on success of preceding points.

Lots of valuable information was provided at the Convention.   These are a few of the major issues Altrusa International considers important to membership.
